Culture Support Plans – Keeping Kids Strong in Culture

What is a Culture Support Plan?

A Culture Plan is a personalised support plan that helps Aboriginal children and young people stay connected to their culture, Country, and community—especially when they are in care. It’s about making sure every child knows:

  • Who they are
  • Where they come from
  • Who their mob is
  • What makes them proud

Culture Plans are part of our commitment to culturally safe care and are developed with families, carers, and community.

Why is culture important?

Culture is more than tradition—it’s identity, belonging, and strength. For Aboriginal children, staying connected to culture helps:

  • Build pride and confidence
  • Heal from trauma
  • Strengthen relationships with family and Country
  • Support long-term wellbeing

What does Mirrimpilyi do?

We work with children, families, carers, and Elders to:

  • Create individual Culture Support Plans for each child in care
  • Include cultural activities, connections to Country, and family history
  • Support carers to understand and respect Aboriginal culture
  • Make sure plans are living documents—updated as children grow

We follow the Aboriginal Case Management Policy and work in partnership with Aboriginal agencies and cultural specialists.

Who is involved?

Culture Plans are developed with:

  • The child or young person
  • Their family and kin
  • Carers and case workers
  • Local Elders and cultural advisors

We make sure the child’s voice is heard and respected.
